okay if that's the reason and it's going to be a one off why didn't they approach Borkcon when they got this info and ask to trade weekends that year? |

Question: Did Unagi know Bork Kon's 2014 dates at the time? Answer: Trae?
Question: Was Unagi under any honest obligation to report these dates to Bork? No. Unagi is way too focused on their own convention. I've never received word from any convention about conflicting dates. |

They could have guessed Bork Con's 2014 date, but they were probably too focused on their own survival. |

Assumptions make an ass of you and me.
I find it odd to be the job of another convention to inform any convention their dates conflict with. Regardless of ones relationship to them. In theory, shouldn't have Unagi already have posted their dates? |

You did notice we're talking 2014 and not 2013, right? Most cons don't announce more than a year in advance even if they have a contract with their hotel.
And Unagi Con, if you recall, has borrowed resources from Bork Con before, so there's a closer relationship here. Maybe the relationships between cons is unique to Wisconsin, but that's the world I know - and there's an interdependence between events there. |

I'll note that on this front, these strips have had Anthrocon and BronyCon quite chatty to make sure our dates do not fall on the same weekend, as we do the dance of "Somewhat similar cons held in the summer that lots of people want to go to both."
As for con dates in the furry world, usually no one announces more than a year out, except Anthrocon. Most other cons cling to a particular weekend; Anthrocon has to work around a convention center's schedule, but generally is (July 1 +/- 10 days). So We've got our dates announced until 2016 right now, because they're booked until 2016. |

We've always talked with the cons that are in our local area and are at a similar time frame. With one, we both have some movement of our dates, and we can't always control them, so we try to keep in contact, and let each other know what dates we are going with even before they are publicly announced. This is to accomplish a few things: not compete over attendance; increase communication between the cons; when the inevitable happens and we do have to schedule against each other, we have open lines of communication, and a shared understanding.
I think that it is a necessity to know what other cons are going on around the time of your con in your area, and plain courtesy to keep in contact with them about decisions you are making that might (greatly) effect them. (golden rule) Yes it can backfire, but if it does, I'd be willing to bet that the fallout from not having that communication would, in general, be worse than talking to them up front. (and yes, cons are crazy conglomerates of frantic personalities all doing different things, so I understand things not happening, it's more the general stance of how you want to approach things that I'm referring to here. Ok, sry. I'll fade back to reading these great strips. Thank you for putting them together, I've laughed a lot, been able to relate to most of the items, and was a little surprised when my con got mentioned a few times in the comments. :-) |
