Hitting the Peak
So the September 18th comic may be delayed until Wednesday September 19th — as I’ve been without power for a few hours and I’m not sure when it’s coming back.

Wow, he’s justifying a bit too hard.
Also, nice to see you covering something that was real news not that long ago.
That’s what got it into my head, but I think I first encountered it at cons like a decade ago?
My favorite convention rule of all time was at Gen Con back in the 80’s.
It was something along the lines of, “Anyone wearing the uniform of a military unit in existence after January 1, 1900, will be required to prove they were a member of that unit.” So if you want to dress like a Nazi, you’re going to have to prove you were one.
No, Lynn it has not hit peak yet. There’s room for escalation and de-escalation. The more the con staff lose their shit, the worse and more political this gets regardless of whether it’s a policy violation or not.
And what’s with this “straight white male” stuff? Did Lynn just judge someone based on their gender, skin color and sexual orientation?
When they are three things that give him privilege and power in society over her, yeah.
Especially when so many straight, white men have gone out of their way to justify Nazis at cons these days.
John, those are the 3 categories(plus not being disabled) that basically guarantee Jim will never be at significant risk of getting killed by an autocratic government as long as he keeps his head down and doesn’t make trouble. His opinion a Nazi uniform being no big deal is filtered through the lens of “how threatening are they, really?”
Lynn, meanwhile, as an outspoken non-straight woman with a history of addiction, is very likely to end up locked up “for her own good” by an autocratic govt. A Nazi uniform to her is a very clear threat, and it’s a threat that Jim is willfully unable to recognize.
Also don’t forget that Lynn is Mexican American.
And, y’know… *holds up news paper*
….is an outfit ‘speech’? I mean it’s making a statement, or can be, but it’s certainly not verbal. I’m not sure, but think there would be some clause about intent.
An outfit can speak volumes.
If the outfit isn’t speech, they still have other options. Those are also less “political”, which should make Jim happy. “Behavior disruptive to the con” or “Cosplay outfit unsuitable for a family environment” or something. This is their event, it shouldn’t be hard to boot him.
Or plain old venue people override. There’s not a lot of places that are sparky with someone hanging around in that crap. Advice would be take care of the boot ASAP, or A: the venue security guys will do it for you, and more importantly B: you’re gonna get told your event isn’t welcome there anymore, because stuff like this is what’s gonna happen. One of those fun hiccups that can turn a first annual into a last annual.
the courts have ruled that clothing counts as speech
We have this exact issue brought up every year at the convention I run and we try really hard to make the distinction between a cosplay or a character that were the uniform vs. just wearing the uniform cause your a jerk.
I guess I do have an opinion on this.
As far as I’m concerned, -anyone- who dresses up in fully Nazi uniform is looking for some hardcore attention. They know what they’re doing, and will play the fool when confronted. Every single one of them who does this either knows what they’re doing or actually likes Nazi’s.
This isn’t 1945 and you aren’t in France or Germany. For fucks sake. No, no tolerance. Absolutely none.
Supreme Court has ruled on this clothing counts as speech so yes it DOES in fact count under your policy
